Course Description

Private lesson instruction is designed to reinforce and complement the variety of subjects and techniques encountered in the program, as well as to allow the student to explore more specific topics in depth with their instructor. Each week, students will submit a video, which the instructor will respond to with detailed feedback based on the student’s questions and performance. Students are given the opportunity to change private instructors every six months, if so desired.

Prerequisite: Students must complete each level in order to continue into the subsequent level of the course.



Prepare students to be proficient at the drum set.

Review and evaluate the student’s performance of the curriculum materials each week.

Trouble-shoot the weak areas in order to assure that the student stays on track.

Challenge students with appropriate materials in order to raise their level of performance and understanding.

Hardware & Equipment Requirements:

You will need:

  • Acoustic 4-piece (or more) drumset (snare, bass, and at least two toms) with at least 1 crash, 1 ride, and hi-hats; electronic kits are acceptable
  • Sticks and brushes
  • Metronome (or metronome app)
  • Audio Technica ATR2100-USB microphone
  • Behringer Xenyx Q502USB Mixer
  • Webcam
  • Desktop or laptop PC or Mac with speakers, running the most up-to-date versions of Google Chrome or Firefox (see “Software Requirements” for more info)
  • Video/audio recording software, such as iMovie or Windows Live Movie Maker
  • Printer, so that you can print out music examples used in the course or an iPad or similar device
  • Isolation headphones, such as Vic Firth’s SIH1 Drummer’s Headphones or in-ear monitors
  • CD/MP3 player (separate from computer)
