History of Gospel, R&B and Soul Music

Course Description

Gospel, R&B and Soul are widely considered as some of the primary influences in the development of disco, rap, hip hop, fusion, and contemporary urban and modern R&B styles. This course will follow the trajectory of gospel, R&B and soul music from the development of hymns and spirituals through modern gospel. This course will cover topics such as hymns and spirituals, early liturgical music, the first gospel choirs, gospel and the blues, southern gospel, gospel and rock n’ roll, gospel and soul, Christian country gospel, contemporary Christian music, urban contemporary gospel, and modern gospel and R&B music. Some of the artists covered include the Kingsmen Quartet, Ray Charles, The Oak Ridge Boys, Andraé Crouch, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Israel Houghton, and more. These topics will be explored via lectures, readings, listening examples and videos.

Teresa James

 

Music Performance Faculty

Growing up in Texas, Teresa James started singing and playing piano at a very young age and has been performing ever since. With her band, the Rhythm Tramps, she has toured throughout the US and Europe and has released 8 CDs, receiving a nomination from the Blues Foundation for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year in 2008 and an Independent Music Award nomination in 2010. In addition to working with her band, she has sung for many films and TV shows, including Toy Story 3, Runaway Jury, Hole, The Simpsons, Ellen, Step By Step, to name just a few. She can also be heard singing with Reba McIntyre on the theme to her television show Reba. As a professional session singer, Teresa has also been featured on commercials (for McDonald’s, Barbie, Michelob, etc.) and works regularly in the studio with Burt Bacharach, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Steve Dorff, and many others. She has served as a studio coach for many other professional singers and actors, including Andie McDowell, Tommy Castro and the Radio City Rockettes. Some of the artists that she has toured or recorded with include Randy Newman, Bill Medley, Neil Diamond, Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Peter Gallagher and others (including a duet with Mickey Mouse). Hardware & Equipment Requirements:

This course will require you to use a computer to view web pages with text, audio, and video examples.

You will need:

Supported Browsers

Canvas, our online learning platform, supports the last two versions of every browser release. We highly recommend updating to the newest version of whatever browser you are using as well as the most up-to-date Flash plug-in. As of March 12, 2016, we support the most recent versions of Flash and popular web browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 11 and Edge (Windows only—please make sure your operating system is also current as noted in the computer specifications lesson; you may need to download the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to submit Canvas assignments)
  • Chrome 54 and 55
  • Safari 9 and 10 (Macintosh ONLY)
  • Firefox 49 and 50 (Extended Releases are not supported)
  • Flash 22 and 23 (for recording or viewing audio/video and uploading files)
  • Respondus Lockdown Browser (supporting the latest system requirements).

Some supported browsers may still produce a banner stating your browser does not meet the minimum requirements for Canvas. If you have upgraded your browser but you are still seeing the warning banner, try logging out of Canvas and deleting your browser cookies. Learn how to clear your cache on a Mac or a PC.

Required Components

  • Flash is required in several places in Canvas: media recording/streaming and viewing as well as uploading files to a course or an assignment. Other than these features, Flash is not required to use most areas of Canvas. Please note that some browsers, such as Firefox, may no longer support Flash.
  • The Java plug-in is required for screen sharing in Conferences. Please note that some browsers do not support Java. Otherwise, there are no other browser plug-ins used by Canvas.

Screen Size

  • LACM Online is best viewed at a minimum of 800×600, which is the average size of a notebook computer. If you want to view your courses on a device with a smaller screen, we recommend using the Canvas mobile app.

Computer Speed and Processor

  • Use a computer 5 years old or newer when possible
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 2GHz processor

Internet Speed

  • Along with compatibility and web standards, Canvas has been carefully crafted to accommodate low bandwidth environments.
  • Minimum of 512 kbps

Screen Readers

  • Macintosh: VoiceOver (latest version for Safari)
  • PC: JAWS (latest version for Internet Explorer)
  • PC: NVDA (latest version for Firefox)
  • There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome
